Somalia Drought Crisis 2011

A severely malnourished Somali boy who had fled with his family the drought-hit southern Somalia lays in Mogadishu, Somalia, 10 July 2011. More than 1,000 Somalis fleeing the worsening drought in the region are arriving in the capital every day, only to find no or very little aid offered to them. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says some 100 children die of malnutrition every day in Somalia while 60,000 are displaced inside the Horn of African nation daily, according to the state-run Radio Mogadishu. In recent weeks, more than 1,500 Somali refugees have been arriving daily in already-packed refugee camps in Dadaab, northeastern Kenya, as a result of the worsening drought. Some 12 million people across Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya are said to be in need of food aid as a severe drought is threatening the region

Thousands of people have arrived in Mogadishu over the past two weeks seeking assistance and the number is increasing by the day, due to lack of water and food. The worst drought in the Horn of Africa has sparked a severe food crisis and high malnutrition rates, with parts of Kenya and Somalia experiencing pre-famine conditions, the United Nations has said. More than 10 million people are now affected in drought-stricken areas of Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Uganda and the situation is deteriorating.
